For whom:  Boys and girls age 12-14

Time:  9:00am to 4:00pm

Fee:  $150.00

Overview -This year ILRC is offering a Youth Camp for rowers between the ages of 11 and 14.  Island Lake Rowing Club’s goal is to promote the sport of rowing as a healthy, lifelong activity for persons of all ages and abilities.  Rowing is a great sport that focuses on teamwork and fitness. Safety is our first priority and all rowing shells will be accompanied by a safety boat.   Coaching will be by the Island Lake Rowing Clubs coaches.

Requirements – be able to swim 50 yards and tread water for 10 minutes.

CAMP PROGRAM

The program has been designed to teach boys and girls the fundamentals of rowing using on the water instruction in a recreational rowing shell. It will give them a taste of rowing fast.

Morning Rowing Program  9:00am – 12 noon

Initial instruction will be on ergs (rowing machines) and at the dockside.

Rowers will use two and four person recreational sculling boats for two sessions on the water each morning

Depending on the acquisition of skills some rowers may progress to a recreational single.

Lunch 12:00 noon

Afternoon program  1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

The afternoon will be land based activities to include:

-Nature based activities  – hiking on the Island Lake trail, plant, tree and bird identification.

- Land sports – ultimate Frisbee, soccer, trail biking

- summer camp type games

- discussion subjects – Management of Capsize,  Hypothermia, nutrition for sports.

Safety is our first priority.  A Coach/safety motor boat will accompany all rowers.

All rowers will wear inflatable PFDs while on the water. We will not row if it is raining and we will provide alternate activity in the boat house.

Our camp registration number is limited to 10 due to equipment limitations.

At the end of the week there will be an optional fun boat race.

Rowers should wear short pants, running shoes, T shirt and a hat.  Bring lunch, sunscreen extra liquid for drinking and a change of clothes.

To get to the club, go south on Hurontario St from  the 5th Side Rd. Mono.  This is just east of the Hockley Valley Road/Mono 5th Side Road intersection.  The club is on the right hand side near the end of Hurontario St.
