Squaring Early!
Squaring Early…
As with most rowing strokes, errors are seldom caused at the actual moment of inconsistency, but typically happen at an earlier portion of the stroke.
For instance, we could harp at you day after day to square early – and day after day you will focus on this movement; but then be flicking that blade at the last possible moment before the catch.
Examining the rower’s actions at an earlier stage in stroke may indicate other problems, which are then leading to late squaring.
For instance: Dynamic or ”fast” hands cause the hands to extend away from the body (at the finish) at the rate as they finish the drive. This quick motion allows the back to then form into catch position before the knees start to rise. Having this catch position early in the recovery phase allows plenty of time to do nothing except what ? - You guessed it – gradually squaring up your blade as you slide up to the catch!!!
