Put yourself in their shoes…
Island Lake Rowing Club has grown tremendously over the past decade. We now have over 120 high school rowers and they have begun to win medals. In the past year two Island Lake alumni participated in the Beijing Olympics and one of them returned with a Bronze Medal in rowing. Many of our high school rowers have gone on to great success in university rowing programs and the number has increased each year.
We also offer an Adaptive Rowing Program for young people with disabilities and a Learn-To-Row program open to any person, young or old. Both have achieved success and continue to grow. All of our volunteer-run programs charge very modest fees.
In order to be more competitive at the high school races we need to purchase new boats, and replace some of our current ones, all of which are used and old. Recently we launched a campaign to raise funds from parents of rowers and other members of the community for the purchase of new boats.
Aluminum boats with 9.9 hp motors accompany the rowers and carry the coaches. They also carry safety equipment in case of a capsize. We currently have two motor boats. Due to the increase in rowers we need to add two coach/safety boats to provide adequate safety and coaching to comply with Federal requirements. We also plan to add a second dock. Presently we have only a single dock; this means that only two boats can be launched simultaneously, thus limiting rowing time for the crews.
Our budget includes:
- two doubles (2-person boats) at a cost of $12,200 each
- one four and one quad (4-person boats) at $20,700 each
- one 8-person boats at a cost of $30,900
- 20 sets of oars at $8,000 total
- two safety/coach boats and motors at $6,650 each
- a dock at $22,000
