Technical Drills Pre Nationals
All drills are done to get you to correct a part of your stroke. They are of value only if you incorporate the correct movement of the drill into your regular stroke.
1) Pause drill. With pause at full body swing into the stern. This works on getting fast hands and body and good ratio.
2) Square blade rowing. First do all square blade and then alternate square blade and feather – one half of the boat rowing at a time. This works on getting your blades in and out clean and getting the blades well off the water on the recovery. It corrects early feathering
3) Legs only rowing with body and arms in Catch position. This works on getting a good Leg drive with a good hang on the oars without using the back at the beginning of the stroke
4) Catch drill. (“Plop drill”). Start at the release. Come up to the catch, with hands low on recovery, square early, then raise forearms and put blade in at the last part of the recovery. Stop there and repeat. Repeat 5-10 times and then take a full stroke.
You will hear a “plop” as the blade enters the water if you get it right.
This teaches you to get the blades in at the end of the recovery so that the blades are fully buried at the start of the leg drive. This will correct “ rowing the blades in.”
