coxswain’s clinic

We will have a clinic for high school coxswains for ODSS and Mayfield clubs this coming week.  The clinic will be conducted by Kendra Marchant who has extensive high school and university experience as a cox.

At the beginning of your high School rowing it is often not appreciated that the cox is a really critical part of the success of crew racing.   Yes the cox does steer and that is very important, but they do so much more which plays a part in successful racing  – including: 1) getting the crew rowing with good technique and in unison, 2)  carrying out the race plan 3) changing the plan during the race as necessary, 4)  pushing for a maximum effort by the crew, 4) giving the crew information about how their race is going.

The clinic will be held after school on a single day that is most suitable to most of the coxies.  Kendra will explain how a successful cox operates, the calls that she makes and how she develops a good “I am in charge” relationship with the crew.  She will then take out a four and demonstrate while the coxies are along side in coach boats.

If you are an interested high School cox please contact Kendra at kendramarchan@trentu.ca and let her know which days after school that you are available.
